Les événements relatés ici se situent principalement durant la période de la récolte du caoutchouc sous le régime léopoldien. Quelques fois il y a des digressions avant et après cette période. L'intérêt de ces textes réside en premier lieux à ce qu'ils traduisent les sentiments des colonisés.
Most of the events documented here are from the rubber period under Leopold II. There are also digressions into periods before and after that time. The importance of these texts lies in the way they give a voice to the colonized in the early period.

Dans cette monographie sur les Bongili, publiée dans Aequatoria 1947, Boelaert scrute d'abord l'histoire ancienne, précoloniale de ce groupe et passe ensuite à la période léopoldienne. Il nous livre des détails extrêment précis sur les familles décimées par l'exploitation du caoutchouc, dont il a interrogé les survivants ou des témoins directs.
In this monograph on the Bongili, originally published in Aequatoria 1947, Boelaert starts off with an overview of the precolonial history of this group, proceeding then to a description of its history under the reign of king Leopold II. Boelaert provides us with very precise details on the families that were decimated during the Leopoldian rubber campaigns. Boelaert bases his account on interviews he had with survivors and direct witnesses.
